TATTOO INFORMATION
PREPARING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
1. TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
- Moisturize: Use a gentle, unscented moisturizer on the area to be tattooed. Avoid applying it on the day of your appointment.
- Avoid Sunburn: Protect your skin from the sun, as a sunburned area cannot be tattooed.
- Skip Shaving: If shaving is necessary, your artist will handle it to ensure the area is properly prepped.
2. REST AND EAT WELL
- Sleep: Get a good night’s sleep before your appointment to feel rested and comfortable.
- Eat: Have a full meal beforehand to keep your energy up. Low blood sugar can make the process harder.
- Bring Snacks: For longer sessions, feel free to bring snacks and a water bottle to stay fueled.
3. DRESS COMFORTABLY
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed.
- Be prepared for ink stains—choose clothes you don’t mind getting messy. We suggest wearing all black.
4. STAY CLEAN
- Shower before your appointment to ensure the tattooed area is clean.
- Avoid wearing strong perfumes or lotions that could interfere with the tattoo process.
5. BRING IDENTIFICATION AND PAYMENT
- Bring a valid ID, as most studios require it for your appointment.
- Confirm payment methods with the studio beforehand (cash, card, etc.).
6. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR ARTIST
- Arrive on time and share any design ideas, references, or concerns during your consultation.
- Inform your artist of any allergies, medical conditions, or medications that might affect your session.
7. AVOID ALCOHOL AND BLOOD THINNERS
- Do not drink alcohol or take blood-thinning medications (e.g., aspirin) 24 hours before your appointment, as they can increase bleeding.
8. BE PREPARED FOR THE PROCESS
- Bring headphones, a book, or other entertainment to keep yourself distracted if needed.
- Keep an open mind and trust your artist—they’re there to bring your vision to life.
9. PLAN FOR AFTERCARE
- Discuss aftercare instructions with your artist and purchase any recommended products ahead of time.
- Plan for your healing period; avoid swimming, sun exposure, and strenuous activities that could affect your tattoo.
10. STAY RELAXED
- It’s normal to feel nervous, especially if it’s your first tattoo. Take deep breaths and remember that you’re in good hands!
TATTOO AFTERCARE
NOTE - Every artist has their own aftercare recommendations. Your artist will provide you with instructions the day of your appointment.
HERE ARE THE GENERAL AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
First, determine what wrap your artist used:
If you are sent home with an aftercare bandage like Saniderm, SecondSkin, Recovery, etc. (clear plastic sticker thing) then leave it on for a few days (3-5). This type of wrap is water resistant so you can shower with it on but still avoid baths, hot tubs, or bodies of water until your tattoo is healed. You may get a goopy black/brown substance under the wrap.. this is the excess plasma and ink that normally oozes out in the first few days. It looks a little gross but ignore it, it won’t hurt your tattoo.
Take off early if: water or sweat gets trapped under or if it peels up over the tattoo. When removing it is easier to take it off in a warm shower. Continue to next steps when it has been removed
Syran Wrap/ No Wrap: – If you are sent home with syran wrap on your tattoo: Take it off in 2 hours – do not rewrap.
Once you take either wrap off:
Wash the tattoo gently with your hands – do not scrub with anything
Use unscented mild soap
Pat dry with a clean towel- be careful with any scabbing
Use an unscented lotion 2-3 times a day – use more if needed (if tattoo becomes itchy or dry) – Hustle Butter is great
Avoid until healed: Pools, baths, hot tubs, any standing water – showers are fine. Also avoid wearing abrasive clothing or jewelry on tattoo. Avoid scratching, picking, or touching your tattoo with unclean hands.. picking and scratching WILL cause healing issues and ink loss. Avoid sun tanning, burning, or even exposing a fresh tattoo to sun (when healed use a high SPF sunblock!!})
Remember, a tattoo is an open wound, treat it as so, be careful with touching it on anything, if so wash immediately.
The scabs will fall off on their own.. let them fall off on their own! The tattoo may go through a scabby/ ashy phase. This goes away when fully healed.
Tattoos usually take anywhere from 6-8 weeks to fully heal. Once your tattoo isn’t scabby or raised it is safe to assume that it is healed.
Fresh tattoos cannot be touched up, it is recommended to wait 2+ months to touch up a tattoo.
Each artist has different aftercare preferences based on their tattoo style/method.
PLEASE follow your specific artist’s directions. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to your artist.. googling aftercare info is not recommended – there’s a lot of misinformation on the internet.
